The table is set and the clock is running. Lateness comes out of the client's session.
LATE CLIENTS
Most artists give 15 to 30 minutes. Inside that window, the lateness comes off the client's session. Past it, the session is off and the deposit is kept. Whether a text from the road changes that is your call.
Your 1 o'clock is 20 minutes late and hasn't texted. The stencil's printed, someone's booked at 4, and you're working out how much of the session is left. Now picture the client driving in from four hours away.

How late is too late for a tattoo session?
Most artists draw the line between 15 and 30 minutes. On the studio pages we read that name a cutoff, 20 minutes is the most common, then 15, then 30. My rule: late means less time, then no session. Up to the cutoff, the time comes out of the session. Past it, the session is canceled and the deposit is kept, and what comes next is in the no-show piece.
Check the wording as well as the number. The 30-minute page ties it to silence: 30 minutes or more late "without advance notice." Two commenters in the out-of-town thread cut it off the same way. One commenter in a thread on blacklisting (5 upvotes) described an artist who kept a deposit and threatened a blacklist over a client 10 minutes late who had texted ahead, and called it ego. That's one secondhand account.

The chair is wrapped and nobody has walked in. The cutoff is how long you wait before you call it.
What does the clock do when a tattoo client is late?
Inside the grace period, the session shrinks and still ends on time. One studio page bills the late minutes, up to 20, at the artist's hourly rate from the scheduled start. Paste this late clause into your tattoo cancellation policy:
Running late? Text me. Up to 20 minutes late, we start when you get here and the session still ends on time, so you lose that time. More than 20 minutes late without a message, the session is canceled, the deposit is kept, and a new date takes a new deposit.
Put your own number in. My rule: strict on paper, judgment in person. The client past the cutoff who did text is where you use it. One commenter excuses weather or an accident if it isn't a habit (3 upvotes).
I'm out and their deposit is forfeited.
How do you handle a tattoo client driving in from out of town?
Book nobody else that day if you can. That was the top tip in one thread about out-of-town clients, 29 upvotes. One commenter (3 upvotes) puts them last in the day instead. It's one thread of nine comments, so treat it as what a few artists do.
Same thread: tell a client an hour away to leave two hours early, and send a parking map (16 upvotes). One comment (5 upvotes) called it harsh when a client who drove four to five hours was canceled for being 15 minutes late. Others in the thread hold the line at 15 and 30 minutes. The policy and the deposit rules are the same for them.
Should you drop a tattoo client who shows up an hour late?
In one 99-comment thread, a client came an hour late and wanted a redesign, and the replies split, with more votes on refunding. One (27 upvotes) said refund the deposit and tell the client you're not the right artist for them. Another (22) said keep it, since the artist did work for the client. A 20-upvote reply said an hour late was enough to forfeit. If you part ways, refund what you're still holding first, then send the message; a deposit already kept for lateness stays kept. For repeat offenders, a 22-upvote comment in the out-of-town thread said forfeit the deposit and/or charge for the wasted time on top of the session.

Rows of empty stations. Nobody is running late yet.

Checked October 2026. Based on artist threads on r/TattooArtists and r/TattooApprentice (2022 to 2026), mainly one nine-comment thread on late out-of-town clients, and about nine studio policy pages that state a cutoff. It's what artists and a few clients report, not a survey.
